November: National Healthy Skin Month

shutterstock_44344936The American Academy of Dermatology has dedicated November as National Healthy Skin Month. Take advantage of these skin care tips as you prep and protect skin during Winter and all year long.

Basic Skin Care

The basics of proper skin care are Examine, Cleanse, Hydrate, and Protect.

Monthly Skin Self-Exam

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests the following steps to a thorough self-exam. You should examine your skin monthly checking for signs of disease or skin cancer. The AAD estimates that one in five Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer annually. Monthly self-examinations are key to early detection, and if caught early, even melanoma is treatable.

  1. Look at your body from head to toe
  2. Ask a friend or partner to examine those hard-to-see areas, like the top of your head
  3. And, look at places where the sun doesn’t shine, like the soles of your feet, behind your knees or your buttocks
  4. Check your moles for warning signs of Melanomashutterstock_182074958
    • Asymmetry
    • Border irregularities
    • Color that varies
    • Diameter or size
    • Evolving or changing in size or color
  5.  If you notice any itching, changes, or bleeding, see a board certified Dermatologist right away.

Cleanse, Hydrate, and Protect

A consistent skin care routine will ensure your skin remains healthy and vibrant. Use a gentle cleanser and hydrate daily followed by an SPF. Some moisturizers combine SPF allowing you to skip a step but you should never skip sun protection entirely. Sun protection is your first line of defense against skin cancer.
